What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Seeing how people are influenced by things that they may not even realize are impacting their behavior, I crafted a story to take that situation to extremes. From the point of view of the two women subjected to mind control, I show how it disrupts their lives and the lives of others in their orbit. They aren't content to become compliant victims, so they fight back.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
After four published nonfiction books, it was time for me to write a book that had been brewing in my thoughts for quite some time. In the writing of OD, I had a deep desire to further test my creative skills. I wanted to stretch beyond my comfort zone, developing characters and relationships that blended the known, my many years as a psychotherapist, with the unknown, a level of imagination, danger, and creative tension that is not possible in my nonfiction writing. Drawing from the rural and urban Midwest, where I have lived my entire life, and fictionalizing themes that are at the core of my work: life in the Heartland, an insider's view of addiction and recovery, wonderfully flawed families and friendship, just made sense to me.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I love mysteries. I especially love mystery series that feature realistic characters and situations, with stories that make me believe those characters actually exist. Of course, that's the type of books I have always aspired to write.

Among the excellent crime series that inspired me to write the Highway Mysteries are Elizabeth George's Inspector Lynley series, Martha Grimes' Richard Jury series, Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series and John Lescroart's Dismas Hardy series.

As for the unique setting of the Highway Mysteries, I spent a good part of my life working in the transportation industry, and was fortunate to get to know many of the interesting people working as truck drivers, customs brokers and other support workers who help get goods to every corner of North America.
