Murder at Mile Marker 18 by Denise Jaden

By Mystery Reads Curator Leave a Comment

The widow of a mystery author and a cat who thinks he’s a dog are launched into their own investigations in this first-in-series cozy mystery.

“Denise Jaden delivers fun and charming mystery in Murder at Mile Marker 18 that every cozy lover will want to have on their shelf.” – Readers Favorite 5-star review

“The mystery is fast-paced and kept me reading through the night. The ending was a surprise and all the pieces fit together perfectly! I can’t wait for the next visit with Mallory and Hunch!” – Jerri Cachero from Cozy Mystery Corner Book Reviews

“This was a cute story with lots of humor throughout. I liked the characters, their interactions, and the pacing of the story line.” – Emily Pennington, Amazon Top 500 Reviewer

Perfect for fans of Molly Fitz and Christy Barritt…

An unlucky amateur sleuth, an adorable cop, and a cat with a hunch…

If anyone had told Mallory Beck she would become Honeysuckle Grove’s next unschooled detective, she would have thought they were ten noodles short of a lasagna. Her late husband had been the mystery novelist with a penchant for the suspicious. She was born for the Crock-Pot, not the magnifying glass, and yet here she is elbow deep in fettuccine, cat treats, and teenagers with an attitude, the combination of which lands her smack-dab in the middle of a murder investigation.

Maybe she should have thought twice about delivering a casserole to a grieving family. Maybe she should have avoided the ever-changing green eyes of her seventh-grade crush—now the most heart-stopping cop in town. Maybe she should have stopped listening to the insightful mewls of her antagonistic cat, Hunch, who most likely wants her to be the town’s next murder victim.

Whatever the case, Mallory Beck got herself into this investigation, and she has a distraught teenage girl counting on her to deliver the truth.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I had been co-writing cozy mysteries with author Lee Strauss. Once I got the hang of plotting a good mystery, I was hooked and wanted to jump right into plotting my own solo series.

“Twins”…?

OR is there a more unusual connection between these two women who keep finding themselves in the middle of mayhem ― both in the U.S. and abroad?

Sophisticated Gee, born of privilege, a socialite philanthropist in Boston, and Karen, a sporty down-to-earth private detective. . .yet inhabiting the same body. And in love with the same man (the family’s hunky private pilot).

This tongue-in-cheek romp follows these “two” on their multi-continent adventures as they track down killers, confront para-military groups, and end up in the crosshairs of an international drug cartel ― changing locations and jetting hither and yon as quickly as they change a shade of lipstick. Yet they also manage to tackle a range of today’s most pressing issues including government corruption, gun control, money laundering, hurricane relief, and more.

WELCOME to this fast-paced, imaginative, and idealized reality where the world’s ills are often tidied up in lightning quick fashion, providing some utopian escapism for anyone who enjoys a mystery, inside a puzzle, inside a riddle as there’s also a classic whodunit enfolded herein―with yet another startling twist at this tale’s unorthodox conclusion . . .

Featured Book: The Stranded in Provence Mysteries, Books 1-3 by Susan Kiernan-Lewis

By Mystery Reads Curator Leave a Comment

Ever wonder what you’d do if someone pushed the re-set button on the world?
The Stranded in Provence Mysteries tell the story of an American woman on vacation in the south of France when the unthinkable happens. After a dirty bomb explodes over the Riviera she finds herself stranded in a French village where daily life is essentially sent reeling back to the 1950s.
So now forget solving crimes with DNA or accessing massive criminal databases. Likewise forget worrying about international terrorism, because that’s now gone too. But you can also forget spending hours on your smartphone, tablet, computer or even TV set.
On the other hand, the bistros are all still open, the produce and cheese markets still run every morning, bicycles dominate the wide avenues instead of cars, and for a budding amateur sleuth and now permanent ex-pat, any murders she stumbles across will have to be solved the old-fashioned way—with brain power and shoe leather.
Oh, and it turns out that romance still works the same as before too.

Featured Book: Yesterday’s Tears by Sam Cheever

By Mystery Reads Curator Leave a Comment

It’s never a good idea to spend too much time in a haunted mansion, and Anna’s favorite cowboy ghost does his best to talk her out of it. But the opportunity to pick from the beautiful antiques left to her in a Crocker resident’s will is just too tempting for Anna and Pratt to pass up. So they’re going in…

They’re prepared to deal with a few cold spots. Maybe the occasional flickering light. But what Anna and the boys weren’t counting on was bumping up against the ghost of Josiah Bumgartner, a contemporary of Joss’ from the 1800s. And when Josiah claims the old woman who lived in the house hid his bones around the place, Anna agrees to help him find them. But something much darker is at work there. And, unfortunately for our happy little gang of antique hunters…Anna seems to have unwittingly stepped right into the middle of it.

Bonded for Murder by Bruce W. Most

Clients call her Angel of the Outlaws. Ruby Dark is a fifty-year-old red-haired Lamborghini-driving widow who took over her husband’s Denver bail-bond business after his unsolved murder. Brash, with a shadowy past, Ruby is not a lady to be trifled with should you jump one of her bonds. Bayne Gibson, a wealthy radio-station owner, has made that mistake. He is charged with the murder of his inflammatory talk-show host, found dead in Gibson’s penthouse pool. Ruby posts the $2 million bond, the largest of her career. But Gibson skips his preliminary hearing and disappears. Her business on the line, Ruby goes after him with the help of her best bounty hunter and her nephew Jason, who works for her while studying night-school law. When a second murder occurs, Ruby’s hunt turns personal. And it’s never smart to make things personal for Ruby Dark.

Targeted Age Group:: 18 and above

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I came across several articles about the often disreputable bail bond business and thought a bail bond agent would make an interesting amateur detective. They see the inside of the criminal justice system, deal with some nasty people, and themselves work in a maligned business. What more could I ask for! The plot stemmed from the true story of the murder of a "shock jock" political talk show host in Denver.
