He tried to hide in plain sight.
It worked. For a while.
But then the war forced an
impossible decision on him.
In the near future: The leaders of Europe sleepwalk into a catastrophe that sparks a new war between Russia and the West.
Warsaw falls on the first day. NATO, more divided and indecisive than ever, leaves Poland to fend for itself.
A small guerrilla army valiantly fights behind enemy lines. The covert Stay-Behind Units of the Territorial Defense Forces are determined to raise hell for the occupation troops. They evade the merciless manhunters of Spetsnaz GRU best they can.
But will they last long enough? Will allied reinforcements arrive in time?
Security consultant Mark Sanders lives a quiet, peaceful family life in Berlin, or so it seems… A dark secret from his past comes back to haunt him and he is forced to make an impossible decision:
Should he go off the grid and try to keep his family safe… Or should he join the mysterious hacker Mlada and expose the devious plot of the Russian regime?

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I am following the news, especially about geo-politics in Eastern Europe, a lot. I saw that the tensions between Russia and its former client states are constantly rising, slowly but surely, and I believed that at some point this situation could escalate very quickly. I believe it is absolutely possible that, just like in 1914, the leaders of Europe sleepwalk into a new war.
At the same time I got interested in an area of intelligence work that is still very under-appreciated in literature: Stay-Behind Networks, covert armies, that are activated after an invasion to fight occupation troops behind enemy lines. The NATO countries had such organisations during the Cold War. Usually they worked at the fringes of the military and intelligence communities and got little love from either side. In Italy the Gladio-Network gained some unwanted fame after rogue agents used the organisation's assets to do false flag operations to defamate the country's left wing parties. After this scandal, most such networks in continental Europe were shut down.
I envisioned that Polish Military Intelligence used the old Cold War ideas to form a modern-era organisation that actually works and is an integral part of the country's defense mechanisms.
The adventures of the Territorial Defense Force's stay-behind operatives provide the backdrop for another storyline: Mark Sanders, a security consultant in Berlin who seems to be hiding from something or someone, gets sucked into the conflict and … you should find out yourself. It won't be boring, I promise.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Most of my characters are inspired by real-life people I have met over the course of my 20-year career in the digital industry, my short military career in Europe, and of course the world news.

Mark Sanders’ phone announced a new message on the encrypted teleks messenger. It was from Svetlana and was very disquieting, it read ‘Need to talk immediately!’.
It was 5:55 in the morning and Mark had not really slept well. He had woken up several times during the night from dreams that were an explainable product of the past weeks’ news broadcasts and his first-hand experience with the anti-Polish protests in Berlin. People wearing fur hats were following him and Ofelia around Berlin, simply looking at them, sometimes speaking among themselves in Russian. Not that Mark spoke any Russian, but in his dream, that’s what he thought they were speaking.
He moved to the living room, slumped onto the couch, and put the wireless Apple AirPods into his ears. This was not the call in the night he was dreading so much, but it needed immediate attention nonetheless. Svetlana was not one to panic easily. When she sounded panicky, it was for a good reason.
“Hey, what’s up?” the tired man mumbled.
“It’s not on the news, yet, but the Russians have taken Kiev and Warsaw,” the voice on the other side announced matter-of-factly.
“Fuck, how?” Mark could not believe it.
“Well, however they did it, they did it.” Svetlana sounded serious and made an effort to keep her voice low.
“How do you know, I mean, how can you be sure?” Mark was not sleepy anymore. He had a vague idea how Svetlana could know of a war on Central European soil before anybody in the news community, but he needed to confirm it was really happening.
“A guy I know, a Ukrainian hacker slash activist, he called me via teleks just now and sent pictures from Kiev via a very peculiar setup of TOR over satellite. I didn’t get it, really. But the guy is serious, he’s no nutcase.” Svetlana relayed what she had learned, and the two discussed what this would mean for them. Svetlana’s opinion would be the one that really counted.
“To be honest, I have no fucking clue,” she answered the question what they should do now.
Mark buried his head in his hands. An AirPod fell out his right ear. He put it back in and got up from the couch to walk around the room, his eyes fixated on the small credenza by the wall where he hid his go bag and the 9 mm Glock he had been given for protection.
Mark tried to think of the most imminent problem for the people in Kiev and apparently Warsaw as well. “Is there any way you can fix the communications?” he asked. “It might help get information to the outside world, and people can get organized to run, hide, fight, whatever they decide to do.”
Svetlana needed a while to think about it. She was sure, she could get into the communications systems of Poland if they were still up.
“Look, I can get in as long as they haven't been switched off at the central networking nodes of the various providers. Once the net is down, you have to physically move there and reboot the whole shebang. Even if they are still on but somehow blocked by outsiders, it would only take minutes for them to find out that there’s a troublemaker around. It would draw a lot of attention to us. We can’t risk that.”
“Yeah, I see.”
