What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I lived in Africa for over thirty years and I wanted to share some of my experiences through a fictional drama series to show the beauty and the savagery of life there. What many people see in the media is not the whole story and I hoped to open the door to a wider understanding of a different culture and its peoples.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I based Leah on myself as I clearly remember arriving in Africa as a new wife in the 1970s. It was such a culture shock. The heat, the crowds, the smells it was all so different. The expatriate wives and families are similar to people I became friendly with and the government officials similar to those I met. Amie's housekeeper was based on the lady who worked for me for years.

But Charles was never going to see Kate in her new dress. At that moment there was a tremendous explosion, the noise battered Amie's eardrums, the walls shuddered, and the roof collapsed. The last Amie saw of Kate was the surprised expression on her face, then she screamed in agony as the masonry fell on top of her.
A wave of flying bricks stopped Amie in her tracks. She froze, horrified, unable to move, and then, as part of the wall behind her crumbled and buried her beneath the debris, everything went black.
