Deadly Dating Games is a romantic thriller written by Joanie Chevalier. Julianna is determined to get back in the dating game. She’s been out of college for a few years now and has gotten over her husband walking out on her, and taking her savings to boot. That’s why she’s on her way to a Reading Club meeting she heard about online. The first book they’ll be reading is about dating, and Julianna loves to read, so it seemed perfect. The hostess, Traci, lives in a grand house in a great neighborhood in San Francisco, and she ushers Julianna into the living room where women are gathered and socializing. Traci seems open and friendly, and Alyssa, a slightly older but very sexy blonde, is a bit overwhelming, but Julianna feels an instant affinity for Bess, an irreverent and funny woman with a penchant for straight vodka. Julianna and Bess soon find themselves unwitting participants in a dark, criminal enterprise.
Deadly Dating Games, is fast-paced and filled with suspense. The book is set in San Francisco and the Bay Area, and the reader gets to experience some of the unspoiled natural beauty of the area through Julianna’s eyes. Chevalier’s characters are well-defined and realistic, especially Julianna, Bess, Judy and Aaron. There’s a psychological thriller aspect to this tale that helps create and sustain the suspense as the reader’s frame of reference is that of the somewhat naive Julianna, who is simply seeking romance and finds herself drawn into something sinister and scary. Her burgeoning romance with Aaron keeps the darkness from totally overwhelming both Julianna and the reader. Deadly Dating Games is intriguing and very enjoyable.
