BURNING MATCHES by PAUL FITZSIMONS
Detective Kieran Temple is woken by a 4am phone call. Not unusual, except that this call is from his ex-partner, Mia Burrows. And she’s just killed her boyfriend.
As Temple is compelled to investigate the death, he must do so behind the backs of his superiors and his wife. All evidence supports Mia’s claims, that she was defending herself against a maniac. But as he delves deeper, Temple learns of a complex and dysfunctional relationship, one that’s been manipulated from the start.
While carrying out this unsanctioned and disturbing investigation, Temple’s renewed contact with Mia also forces old feelings to resurface, feelings that once nearly cost him his marriage and his career. And with his gut telling him that Mia’s boyfriend was not the brute he’s being made out to be, Temple is determined to get answers while everyone – including Mia herself – just want it left alone.

Featured Book: Sins of the Father (The Chronicles of Detective Marcus Rose) Volume 3 by A.D. White
Detective Marcus Rose enters the emergency room on a stretcher in critical condition after someone has shot him three times. The story then jumps back four weeks to the murder case that ultimately leads to his shooting. Cops have found
25-year-old Sarah Murphy in her home with a fatal stab wound in her back and
through her heart. The number “347” is written in blood on a bathroom mirror. Two other recent killings, one in Virginia and the other in Maryland, have the same M.O., from the manner of death to the bloody number on a mirror. Marcus and his partner, Detective Logan Steele, lock onto a suspect quickly, even if they initially only connect him to two of the victims. As the local newspaper picks up the story and dubs the serial killer “the Boogey Man,” Marcus, believing there’s a chance they don’t have the right culprit yet, continues to investigate. Deciphering the cryptic numbers at the scenes may be the answer to solving the murders. In this story, the homicide unit’s new sergeant, Reginald Powell, offers comic relief, as his
intermittent mumbling renders orders incomprehensible. The lead detective (Marcus Rose) is, as always, profound. He’s a germophobe who often uses hand sanitizer, but it’s apparent that Marcus is also trying to wash away “the stink of crime,”
especially at home with his wife, Gina. You will be anticipating the confrontation that lands Marcus in the hospital. The twists and turns will leave you holding on as you arrive at the stunning conclusion.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I am following the news, especially about geo-politics in Eastern Europe, a lot. I saw that the tensions between Russia and its former client states are constantly rising, slowly but surely, and I believed that at some point this situation could escalate very quickly. I believe it is absolutely possible that, just like in 1914, the leaders of Europe sleepwalk into a new war.
At the same time I got interested in an area of intelligence work that is still very under-appreciated in literature: Stay-Behind Networks, covert armies, that are activated after an invasion to fight occupation troops behind enemy lines. The NATO countries had such organisations during the Cold War. Usually they worked at the fringes of the military and intelligence communities and got little love from either side. In Italy the Gladio-Network gained some unwanted fame after rogue agents used the organisation's assets to do false flag operations to defamate the country's left wing parties. After this scandal, most such networks in continental Europe were shut down.
I envisioned that Polish Military Intelligence used the old Cold War ideas to form a modern-era organisation that actually works and is an integral part of the country's defense mechanisms.
The adventures of the Territorial Defense Force's stay-behind operatives provide the backdrop for another storyline: Mark Sanders, a security consultant in Berlin who seems to be hiding from something or someone, gets sucked into the conflict and … you should find out yourself. It won't be boring, I promise.
