What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My love of mystery, romance and classic cinema. I’ve been a fan of old movies since I was a teenager, and one of my favorite romantic mystery films is The Thin Man. The dialogue is top-notch and the romantic chemistry between William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles is playful and fun.
Add to that, I love Manhattan as a setting, and I’ve always been fascinated by the 1920s—the bootleggers, the flappers, the speakeasies, the post-war abandon. It was a combination of all these elements that inspired me to try my hand at creating a sleuthing couple of my own.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Trixie Frank, the heroine in It Had to Be You, is an heiress like Nora Charles, but that’s where any similarity ends. She’s also an ambitious tabloid reporter. Part of the inspiration for that aspect of her character is the 19th century “girl reporter” Elizabeth Jane Cochrane, better known as Nellie Bly.
The hero, Sean Costigan, is a second generation Irish homicide detective with a seen-it-all Phillip Marlowe kind of attitude.
Author Bio:
Delynn Royer is the older, funnier, more ornery alter ego of award-winning author Donna Grove, who, as a young mother, published four historical romances. The first, A Touch of Camelot, won a Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Award. Soon after that, Delynn set aside her pen to concentrate on her day job and raising her two sons.
Motherhood never ends but kids eventually fly the nest. Delynn has returned to her first love, writing, and is happy to be at work on new titles that she hopes will entertain and lighten readers’ hearts.
Aside from delving into the historical research that inspires her mystery and romance novels, Delynn enjoys classic movies, reading, travel and yoga. She lives with her husband in Pennsylvania.
