By Mystery Reads Leave a Comment

Radiance1
Kelly Matthews, a wealthy rock diva, is robbed and betrayed by her sadistic husband and flees to France. There, the re-occurring nightmare she suffered as a child, becomes terrifyingly real, when she is confronted by memories of another life, in the war torn Haute Savoie, of 1943.
Vilified by the world’s press, and hounded by her husband, before she can ever hope to reclaim her future, she must lay to rest a ghost from her turbulent past…

Joyce Weaver is married with two grown up sons and lives in North Yorkshire. In her teens, she completed a four year City & Guilds course in Baking and Confectionery at Leeds Polytechnic. Whilst there, she won many prizes for her achievements including the Leeds Master Baker’s prize and the JW Fawcett Trophy. She gained a distinction in Food Technology. Many years later, she discovered that she was allergic to wheat, yeast and dairy products, among a whole host of other things.

She recovered from severe chronic fatigue syndrome, after radically changing her diet and receiving pioneering desensitization treatment for multiple food and chemical allergies.
She was inspired to write The Gourmet Rotation Diet for Allergy Sufferers, in order to help other people to some extent, to take control of their own health.

A Gathered Radiance is her first novel and she is currently working on her sequel, The Feral Spy.

When she is not writing, she works in the family business, doing the accounts and general administration.

cover2-copy2
Baine is a mystery even to himself, a man with unexplained abilities and no past, when he awakes he knows only two things; his business is death and business is good.

The delicate balance of his world is shattered as he finds himself a pawn torn between exiled warring archangels on earth fighting for Metatron’s Cube, a holy artefact that holds God’s secrets of creation. Ancient angelic factions, The Grigori and the 11th Order headed by Lucifer and Gabriel threaten the very existence of our world and Baine soon discovers that he alone is the key. As the centuries pass, Gabriel and Lucifer struggle to maintain their iron willed control over their respective orders whilst attempting to fight against the invading tide of human emotions that threaten their angelic serenity.

Thrust into a war that has raged since the dawn of time, Baine finds himself fighting for his life and his freedom, but he must first understand his past before daring to dream of a future,

As the war rages, carnage ensues and the bodies mount, a dangerous man without emotion or conscience must choose; between wielding the infinite power for his own gain or else finding the humanity within himself to save us all.

Born in Bath, England in 1974, a self-professed “funny onion”, equal parts sport loving jock and comic book geek.

From an early age reading so many works of varied authors I took the somewhat foolhardy decision to attempt my own novel, “Rapture Falls” my second novel “Fangland” is now in the editing stage.

Perhaps one day I will be able to list my publishing achievements and literary awards but for now I simply hope to have produced an interesting piece of work that entertains with a modicum of intelligence.

I have always been an avid fan of the Horror/Supernatural genres and find that many great works in this field are automatically dismissed due to their subject matter.

4th September – My second novel “Fangland” is currently recieving preview reviews before its launch. My third novel “Gated” has just passed 15,000 words.

Free Fall – A Noir Short Story

By Mystery Reads Leave a Comment

Free-Fall-cover
FREE FALL: Fast paced, gripping noir tale of greed, deceit and murder.

If you’re into noir, Free Fall is just what the doctor ordered…if the doctor is named Kevorkian.

Rick and Gloria. A match made in hell. Little did he know, as he cruised across the country on his motorcycle on old Route 66 that his journey would land him in the cold heart of Hollywood and the even colder heart of Gloria. And little did he know, as they watched “Double Indemnity,” that, as in the movie, the scent of honeysuckle would also be the scent of murder…and his downfall.

FREE FALL (excerpts):

“You think the enemy was in Iraq. And you think these people are your friends?” She walked to the window, looking out. I followed. A breeze blew a gauzy white curtain in. We looked through the old-fashioned, wide-slatted Venetian blinds at the cars hustling down the boulevard below. At the people scurrying back and forth, each one so busy. Many with cell phones attached to their heads. Most of them – probably – with screenplays under their arms. Movers and shakers. “They don’t give a shit about you. They didn’t support you in the war. They think you’re a baby killer.”

“Do you?”

She looked into my eyes. “I think you’re just like me.”

* * *

I kept looking at the Hollywood Sign, wondering about all the people down below, pretending to be in its glow. Where do they go after L.A.? There is nowhere, the land ends and they just tumble into the arroyos and ravines, never to be heard from again.

Author of over thirty published short stories in a variety genres, ranging from noir to straight mystery. Satire to serious fiction. Several award winners among them. In a previous life, I was a script doctor and worked in radio/TV and film and wrote articles for magazines and periodicals.

I am also the last person to have shot on the fabled MGM backlot before it bit the dust to make way for housing. According to Steven Bingen, one of the authors of the recent and well-received, book MGM: HOLLYWOOD’S GREATEST BACKLOT: “That 40 page chronological list I mentioned of films shot at the studio ends with his [Paul D. Marks’] name on it.”

The Sanctuary Stone

By Mystery Reads Leave a Comment

Sanctuary-Stone-cover-small
A crime novel set in Jamaica uses the island’s ancient links with the slave port of Liverpool to examine how the trade reverberates to the present day.

The Sanctuary Stone highlights the brutality and callousness of fictitious Liverpool slave traders the Bell family, which continued on their Jamaican plantations for years following abolition. An ancient injustice festers until it explodes into the modern day as a young man from Jamaica seeks brutal revenge against the current generation of Bells.

Central to one plank of the mystery is the issue of sanctuary and whether or not Liverpool offered a safe haven for slaves who had escaped on disembarking at the city’s famous Pier Head. The city’s oldest artefact is The Sanctuary Stone, believed to be from around 1292, and as the story unfolds we learn that it had entered the mythology of slaves as a place to head for should they ever find themselves out of manacles.

Tom Paver, 44, is the youngest of six children raised in what he describes as “a typically Catholic Liverpool household: noisy, matriarchal and clannish.” He was educated by Irish nuns from the age of 3 and didn’t escape their warm embrace until he was 18. Nice people, though a bit handy with the punishment cane, Tom says. He deserved it most of the time, if he’s honest.

He gained a degree in marketing from Manchester Polytechnic, though not before a year in Barcelona growing up quickly. His perfunctory Spanish still comes in handy each year on the family holiday, when he enjoys mangling verb conjugations.

Tom is married with two children and divides his time between Liverpool and London. He has hopes of becoming a world class fly fisherman and of Everton Football Club winning the European Cup, but admits that neither event is likely any time soon. If there were more hours in the day or weeks in the year then he’d actually complete the GR11 path across the length of the Spanish Pyrenees.

Torn to Pieces

By Mystery Reads Leave a Comment

Torn-to-Pieces-Book-Cover-187x300
When NYPD detectives Jack Whelan and Burton Carver are assigned to investigate a grisly Greenwich Village homicide, the first-on-scene offers dispatch an ominous warning: “Tell ‘em it’s a nightmare. A total freaking nightmare.” After sizing up the scene, the pair agree on one thing: the responding officer got it right. With the discovery of a second dismembered victim, the pair are caught up in an internal department power struggle, and blindsided by a newspaper reporter intent on sabotaging their investigation.

Kept out of the loop by the lieutenant running the task force and having run afoul of the brass, Whelan and Carver find a pair of allies in the crime scene unit and make it personal—enlisting outsiders and working the case from the shadows. When a key player disappears, Whelan and Carver have to decide which rules they can follow and which ones they’re willing to break in order to locate the missing woman, and bring down a killer who is, quite literally, butchering his victims alive.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:
“Joe Monks long ago proved his prowess at creating tension in the short fiction format. In fact, some of his short story work borders on legendary. The question concerning Torn to Pieces is, can he maintain that quality at novel length? The answer is a resounding: Yes. The book hits the ground running and continues at a relentless pace until its shattering climax. When the truth is revealed, it will leave you breathless. Be forewarned-once you read the first page, Joe Monks will own your every free moment.”

–Franklin E. Wales, The Hacker’s Source

“A gripping, page-turning murder mystery. Monks’ dialogue drives this novel and gives the characters life beyond the printed page. The conversations between characters are sharp, real and essential for moving the plot forward. Torn to Pieces will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading. Job well done.”

–Robert Errera, Editor, CHERI Magazine

Joseph M. Monks was born in Queens, New York on February 21st, 1968, and while he no longer lives in the state, he will always consider himself a New Yorker.
His family upped and left for the ‘burbs in 1977, and Joe rooted himself in Valley Stream, NY, where he began a pursuit of two rabid passions: hockey and writing. Joe began writing when he was nine and has not looked back, particularly in recent years. Undaunted by the loss of his eyesight in 2002 (the result of Monks’ long-time battle with diabetes), the then-33 year old author completed his first anthology of original fiction, Stuff Out’a My Head, released in December of the same year.
Joe continues to write original short fiction, in addition to branching out into the world of screenplays and filmmaking.
Despite blindness and surprising many, Joe returned to the comic book field, where he got his start as co-creator of the cult phenomena horror title Cry For Dawn. Shrugging off the inertia of his ex-partner and continuing to be a driving force in independent horror, Joe released a spate of successful comic book titles including The Night Terrors, NightCry, Tales of the Dead and several one-shots.
Joe’s more recent comic endeavors have included Gory Lori, a modern day zombie apocalypse series illustrated by Jeff Salisbury and Mike Koneful, and the horror anthology Zacherley’s Midnite Terrors, featuring the television horror host of the same name. In addition to getting the opportunity to work with The Cool Ghoul, Joe has enjoyed his experiences working with such legendary talents as Basil Gogos, William Stout, fantasy artist Ken Kelly, and others.
In 2003, one of Joe’s short stories, “Chance Meeting,” was optioned for adaptation to the screen by Japanese publishing powerhouse Bunkasha in tandem with DK Publishing. Joe was offered the opportunity to take a stab at the script for the short, , which was to have been used as a television pilot in Japan. The script was green-lit and produced, though the producers decided to take the property, starring supermodel Matsuo Otani, and release it as a stand-alone DVD instead. Accompanied in the hungry Asian horror market by a hardcover photo book, it was a runaway success. The adaptation of the story (which appears in Stuff Out’a My Head), received critical acclaim in the Far East and has done so in the United States as well, notably after it screened at the New York Horror Film Festival. The experience of working in film (Joe not only wrote the script but has a slightly larger-than-cameo role in the pilot) pushed Joe on a path towards fulfilling another long-time goal, that of directing his own feature film. With The Bunker, Monks sought to break new ground once again.
Joe lives in Southwest Florida with his wife, Pamela, their dog, Luna, two black cats, Midnite and Shadow.

Judgment Tramp by J.D. Currie

By Mystery Reads Leave a Comment

Ex-Army helicopter pilot Eb McLean is struggling to deal with his emotional scars and return to civilian life, but a sudden explosion and vicious murder throw him back into another kind of war. Now his sister Maggie’s car is burning in front of their restaurant and hardened FBI agent Nick Kavadas wants to nail Eb for the crime. Eb finds himself in a race against time to find the real killer and peel back the layers of deceit and lies which threaten to destroy everything he holds dear. But whom can he trust? ATF Special Agent Danielle Ricci, who may be harboring a secret of her own? The sexy, but deadly, Imme Amoud? Or could his involvement with her be a fatal attraction? In the frantic hunt for the killer Eb is forced to confront his own tortured past.

I grew up in Michigan, and still feel a strong connection to the state. Judgment Tramp takes place partly in South Haven, MI, one of my favorite places. Currently I live in St. Louis, MO, where I’m also a professional musician. I find that music and writing dovetail very nicely with each other—they are both expressive mediums. When I’m not writing, you can find me playing keyboard with several local bands.
